The Blue River is a critical area for biodiversity The Blue River is a critical area for biodiversity in our city — come learn about the river close up and help our Kansas City WildLands team survey for aquatic life. You'll learn how to identify different groups of aquatic critters and what each group can tell us about water quality. You won't believe what's hiding just below the surface! November 7th, RSVPs are required - visit bridgingthegap.org/events to sign up.

Come out to @powellgardens this December 5th from 1-5pm to select your very own native Christmas tree. The suggested donation of $25/tree supports the work of KC WildLands and Heartland Center for Regenerative Agriculture, AND also snags you two free tickets to the Evergy Festival of Lights!

Stay tuned for more... if you dare!
Bridging the Gap has learned that Jackson County, Bridging the Gap has learned that Jackson County, Missouri, has initiated a process that could lead to a potential sale of property impacting Blue River Glades Natural Area. Blue River Glades is located along Blue River Road near Swope Park and has been the focus of preservation efforts by thousands of volunteers and many partners over the years including our own KC WildLands program, the Missouri Dept. of Conservation, The Nature Conservancy, Heartland Conservation Alliance, Urban Trail Co, the Sierra Club, and more.

Jackson County Legislature’s Resolution No. 22345 designated a parcel including Blue River Glades as surplus, stating “the administration can identify no current or future use for the property.” A Request for Proposals (RFP 26-057) is now posted soliciting bids for this parcel through November 9th, 2026.

Blue River Glades Natural Area is one of the best examples of this rare habitat type in our region. An area with nearly 300 year old gnarled chinquapin oak trees perched atop exposed limestone bluffs, it is home to a stunning variety of wildflowers, colorful songbirds, bobcats, turkey, and the hearts of many KC residents. Hiking trails thread through the area, including the famed Eddie-Ballentine Trail and popular nearby bike trails.

The Legislature previously recognized this property in its Blue River Parkway Master Plan which declared the county's intent to protect these Parkway lands in perpetuity for conservation. Blue River Glades is also a state-designated Natural Area and represents the northernmost range of many species otherwise found only in the Ozarks.

Bridging the Gap has been in contact with our partners at the County, as well as our wider networks to learn more about the potential surplusing and sale process, and its implications for this irreplaceable natural community. To receive information on ways you can engage in this process, please visit tinyurl.com/3pdw4v5h to join our advocacy list. When and if we identify actionable steps on this or future issues, we will share them directly with you.

We are encouraged and grateful to know that so many people and organizations are invested in the future of Kansas City’s natural areas.

This collaborative initiative aimed to restore up to 240 acres of riparian habitat, enhance green infrastructure along key segments of the Blue River, and expand the urban tree canopy in surrounding neighborhoods—ultimately building a healthier, more resilient watershed for Kansas City.
In this episode, we chat about Bridging The Gap’s part of the project!
