Ever wonder what a tree planting volunteer workday looks like? Here's a peek into what you can expect from a group workday from a tree planting during" Earth Week".

Our Heartland Tree Alliance program had its busiest "Earth Week" in recent memory, planting more than 200 trees with the help of more than 300 volunteers! Want to help out too? Visit bridgingthegap.org/volunteer to find all of our current volunteer opportunities.

We’re kicking off a collaboration between Kansas

We’re kicking off a collaboration between Kansas City WildLands and Kansas City Hiker! This summer, hike ten of the Kansas City WildLands sites and receive a free sticker in the mail to celebrate. To verify participation, post photos on your social media and tag or mention @btg_kc OR email the WildLands team with a personal story about your experience. To receive the sticker, email the WildLands team with your contact info so we can send it to the best place. Throughout the next month, we’ll be featuring some of those WildLands sites to celebrate nature right here at home. Kansas City WildLands, a program of Bridging The Gap, conserves, protects, and restores remnant natural areas on public land across the metro – for more info, please visit www.kcwildlands.org.

Our first feature is Blue River Glades Natural Area: Located just south of Swope Park, 30-acre Blue River Glades Natural Area contains a rare limestone glade ecosystem – one of the northernmost occurrences of such a community in Missouri and the best example existing locally. Trails in the area move alongside gnarled chinquapin oaks nearly 300 years old sitting atop slab-like outcroppings of Bethany Falls limestone. A prairie-like flora of grasses and wildflowers provides rich color and texture through most of the year. Blue River Glades Natural Area is owned and managed by Jackson County Parks and Recreation.

Happy Compost Awareness Week! When food is lost or wasted, it isn't just the scraps that go to waste, but also any resources like water, energy and labor. When food can't be used, keeping it out landfills and turning it into a new resource - fertilizer - is a great option.

There are lots of ways to start composting in the KC region. Check out local orgs like @KCCanCompost post and @CompostCollectiveKC, you can utilize the compost drop-off sites at our Red Bridge and Pleasant Valley recycling centers, and
you can also go to recyclespot.org and type in your zip code and your materials (food waste) and find even more drop-off sites in your area.
