Have you been looking for a way to volunteer but aren’t sure about getting outside or can’t participate in manual labor? Our seed cleaning days might be perfect for you!

After our WildLands team and volunteers spend countless hours collecting native seed by hand, it gets cleaned and processed in our seed facility at the Bloch Barn in @jcprdparks. Volunteering for a seed cleaning day looks like sifting through that seed, running it through your fingers while sitting in the air conditioning and chatting with our staff and other volunteers. In 2024, the U.S. celebrates the 60th anniversary

In 2024, the U.S. celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Wilderness Act, a groundbreaking law to protect undeveloped lands. When President Lyndon Johnson signed the Act on September 3, 1964, it established the National Wilderness Preservation System with 54 areas across 13 states. Today, the system has grown to 806 areas in 44 states and Puerto Rico. This milestone is a moment to reflect on the past and consider how to further safeguard wilderness in the future.

To celebrate this historic effort, come hear our Kansas City WildLands team speak on a panel at the Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center tonight from 6:30-8:30pm. Drinks and snacks provided!

Recycling can feel complicated and overwhelming, environmental policy might not feel as far along as so many of us would like, but it's important to remind ourselves of the small steps we've taken along the way. Folks have always been working toward an environmentally conscious future, and that work will continue!

Did you know that black plastic isn't being recycl

Did you know that black plastic isn't being recycled in metro-KC or most other parts of the US?

We've noticed a proliferation of black plastic at the three Community Recycling Centers we manage for the City of Kansas City, MO.

Most of it is in the form of takeout food clamshells and frozen entree trays that aren't being recycled regardless of their color, but the photo below shows it's also being used for bottles, jars and canisters that would be recyclable if some other color.

The problem with recycling black plastic is that it cannot be identified for separation by the near-infrared optical sorters used by Material Recovery Facilities to separate the different kinds of plastics accepted for recycling.

Plastics that aren't separated by the optical sorter go to the landfill, so it's best to put them into your trash directly.

In metro-KC, the only plastics being recycled are packaging bottles, jars, jugs, tubs (think yogurt, sour cream, cottage cheese and similar containers) and food-grade buckets up to 5 gallons.

But no plastics bearing a #3, 6 or 7 in the 'chasing arrows' triangle are being recycled, regardless of form.
