Ernie Miller Park
Johnson County Parks and Recreation
This park near Olathe contains a small prairie remnant that was all but lost – choked out by eastern red cedar trees. However, the prairie was the subject of unique events in December of 2001 and 2002 – the Kansas City WildLands cedar Christmas tree workday. At this event, the public was given the opportunity to obtain a native red cedar Christmas tree and in doing so help to restore the prairie. In 2002, a donation of time and equipment by Westar Energy removed the remaining cedars. Since invasive red cedars were removed from the site, native prairie flora has been making a comeback assisted by aggressive planting and seeding by KC WildLands.
