Thanks for thinking about how you can help our area’s environment! Before you begin to recycle, consider first reducing, which saves even more energy. Avoid heavily packaged items and reduce your use of products which not only create environmental waste, but are bad for you, such as soda pop. Don’t forget to create a compost pile in your yard, where you can recycle most foods (except meat and dairy) and yard waste, which contribute significantly to landfills.

After you’ve reduced, recycling is a great and easy way you can contribute significantly to our local environment! Products made from recycled paper, glass, and plastics save 40 percent or more of the energy used to create products from virgin materials.

Community Recycling Centers Now Accepting MORE Plastics,
Including #2 Tubs, #5 and Some #6 Plastics!

Both the KCMO curbside recycling and Recycling Centers now accept the following types of plastic.  Please read the list below carefully, as we are only able to accept the following specific types:

  • #1 and #2 plastic bottles with a neck (as before)
  • #2 HDPE margarine and yogurt containers
  • #5 Polypropylene food containers (ketchup, chocolate syrup, etc.)
  • #6 rigid, transparent polystyrene food containers (NOT Styrofoam™ food containers)

All food containers should be clean and free of food residue.

Additionally, Bridging The Gap Community Recycling Centers are able to accept:

  • #6 polystyrene material (Styrofoam™ packing material – “peanuts,” blocks or sheets – NOT food containers. These items must be clean and free of ink and tape.)

Many plastics are still NOT being collected at this time. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Plastic bags
  • Plastic toys
  • PVC pipe
  • Plastic sheet material, (shower curtains, drop clothes, table clothes, etc.)
  • Sandwich bags, medical tubing, pill bottles, Styrofoam cups, and plastic forks
  • Motor oil bottles
  • Pesticide and/or herbicide bottles
  • Miscellaneous automotive product bottles (brake fluid, transmission fluid, windshield washer fluid, etc.)

Please NEVER RINSE motor oil, pesticide, herbicide or other automotive product bottles.
Just one gallon of motor oil can pollute up to one million gallons of water.
